Update: Kentucky Teen Injured at Park Talks about her Ordeal
A Massachusetts congressman hopes a Kentucky girl whose feet were severed on an amusement park ride last year will help persuade Congress to pass legislation that would subject such rides to federal regulation.
The Courier-Journal reports that 14-year-old Kaitlyn Lasitter of Louisville and Rep. Ed Markey spoke at a news conference in Washington on May 14. Lassiter's feet were severed when a ride malfunctioned at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville last June.
Currently rides at traveling carnivals or church socials fall under federal regulation, but fixed-site rides at amusement parks like Six Flags do not.
Markey calls it a dangerous double-standard that defies common sense.
Lassiter's right foot was reattached and she uses a prosthesis on her left.
She described not being able to go to the mall with her friends, having to use crutches or a wheelchair and holding on to her father to get around.
